It was getting darker. The bare minimum of light that lit the streets was just enough to tell where one was going. The streetlights hadn't kicked on yet, but they would any minute.
Haruka still searched around looking for any sign of Riku, calling until his voice was too shaken to get the name out. His mind raced as fast as his legs ran around the area, searching every alley and open street he came across.
Nothing made sense. Where was Riku? How could they have been separated? Hadn't they...they...
Haruka stopped running, grasping a light post as he attempted to catch his breath. It had just hit him. They were dead. When he woke up in the alley, he thought of the possibility; but this was reality. He wasn't alive. Which meant his little brother was dead too.
He slid with his back to the pole until he sat upon asphalt. Haruka recalled the last few moments at the convenience store, where he witnessed his brother's murder once again by memory. His body started to shake.
"I couldn't protect you Riku.. I'm so sorry.." His head fell back to thunk lightly on the pole he rested against. A hand covered his eyes, but tears still escaped.
"Riku.. Rikuu... AAUGH!" It was hard to breathe. It was too much; Haruka sat forward forgetting momentarily about his despair and pulled angrily at the chain on his chest. It didn't move. Still he pulled and pulled, growling in frustration until his arms were tired and his manic episode had calmed somewhat. He pulled himself up, using the post for balance. Haruka still wasn't sure what he thought about being...dead, but he knew if he was here than Riku surely was. Which meant he was alone. And probably as freaked out as Haruka was. He couldn't bear the thought.
He stumbled a few steps before regaining his composure and began scanning the area again. It felt so empty. In more ways than one. Haruka didn't remember passing anyone. Though things like that tend to slip your mind when you're running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.
"Riiikuuu! Rikuuuu!" Haruka was starting to feel exhausted. He still hadn't stopped shaking, though it wasn't as bad the minutes before.
Only making it to the next light post, Haruka stopped. He thought he heard something, but it was faint so he stood still to listen. At first the only thing he heard was the nightlife and his own breathing. Weird, how you could still breathe even when you're dead. Hard habit to kick, he guessed.
"Haruka!"
THAT caught his attention. Haruka's head whipped around in the direction of the call, responding with his own relieved albeit a bit hysterical, shout. "RIKU!"
The street lights kicked on. He needed to blink to adjust to the sudden brightness, being so used to the fading light that was now completely void of anymore orange streaks in the sky. Stars had started to glitter through, though it seemed a bit cloud cast, for there weren't many.
Now that lights lit the street, it was easier for Haruka to find Riku. He forgot his own exhaustion and ran for his brother. Thank Kami-sama they found each other! If this went on much later into the night, Haruka was going to have had a hard time keeping what was left of his sanity.
Just as they were reunited in the middle of the street, Riku collapsed before Haruka. He nearly didn't catch him, feeling as drained as he was. They both fell to the asphalt, Haruka pulling Riku to himself and holding him tightly, as if he'd disappear again. He couldn't remember the last time the younger sibling had cried, let alone completely fallen apart at his big brother. Haruka felt relieved. He didn't have any problem letting his own tears fall now. Not that he could hold them back much longer if he tried.
Haruka simply held Riku while he fought to control himself. The only comfort he could think to offer was to rub and pat his back, as their mother often did when they were upset. Though it had been years since either of them had accepted- no, needed such consoling.
"We're--Haruka, we're..."
Riku's tear-choked voice drifted up to Haruka's ears before starting up again. No, he didn't need to finish the sentence. Haruka knew exactly what was wrong. They were dead. Deceased. And completely alone in this familiar, yet totally foreign place. Haruka swallowed, choking back any weakness that might disconcert his brother. He needed to be strong for them; now more than ever.
"It's ok. We'll be ok. I won't let anything happen to you. I promise." He buried his face in Riku's hair, seeking his own comfort in the silky strands.
'this time...' he thought.
