Hey there! I've been chosen to interview the mysterious, broody 9'th seat of Hachibantai's own Kouyama Riku-kun! He's been threatened- ehh, invited to join us to answer a few questions. So let's start!
So! Riku. How's the weather in Soul Society? Do you enjoy being a Shinigami?
Hello. Ah...it's the same as always, I suppose. As for being a shinigami, it isn't really something to enjoy, is it? There's a lot of fighting and killing. It isn't a luxury job.
Hmm. True, true. You do act as the military force of Soul Society, after all. What about as a member of Hachibantai? Could you tell us what that's like?
I've never been in another division, so I can't compare, but it's a good place. Our members are loyal. Kyouraku-taichou seems lazy to everyone else, but he's a good man. He's helped me more than once.
It seems like you hold your captain in high respect. So what is your social relationship with other shinigami? Any different than with your own squad?
Not especially. I tend to keep to myself regardless of who I'm around. I do see others of Hachibantai more often, obviously, but that's the extent of it.
Ahh, I see. Do you have any friends? Or perhaps a romantic interest?
Friends...there's Hamasaki Masaharu. He's always looking out for me, even if I don't need him to. I don't have any interest in romance, though.
It's nice to have that kind of support handy when you need it though, nee? So you have one good friend, that's lovely~ From another's viewpoint though, how do you think people often see you?
Ah...I suppose I come across as cold. I don't mind, though. I'm more concerned with being able to perform the best I can in battle.
Well that's no good! You should open up more~ But speaking of battle, when you're engaged in battle, what is your strategy? Do you have one?
I suppose it's to stay focused. You never know exactly what your enemy can do. I try to make sure I don't miss anything, and I react based on how my enemy fights.
Ooh~ Good strategy. A good fighter must be observant! Do you get into tough situations often? Or do you have a pretty easy time defeating the enemy?
I suppose I have enough experience that I can take down an average hollow without trouble, but...I'm not very strong. There are things I can't do alone. Every time I get into a difficult situation, it just pushes me to work harder to become stronger, so I won't fail again.
It's good to know your limits~ Even better to strive to become stronger! So when you're not working yourself, what do you do in your spare time?
I usually go out to Rukongai to train. Sometimes I like to just spend time alone though, usually in my room in Hachibantai's barracks. Ah...and I've been spending more of my free time in the residential areas of Rukongai lately.
Ooh, in Rukongai, you say? Curious why a shinigami would frequent the "outside" world. Speaking of Rukongai! What part did you come from prior to entering the academy? What was that like for you? Any family you lived with?
After I came to Soul Society, I ended up in district 27 of South Rukongai. It wasn't a bad place...not compared to the later districts, anyway. Of course, there were fights and instances of thievery, but nothing we couldn't handle. I didn't know anyone there, though, so I lived alone. Even if you have family in Rukongai, it's rare to meet them there, you know? But most of the people there were good. I still talk to some of them sometimes, when I'm in the area. I don't think they expected me to become a shinigami.
Ah, well that's good~ And it's nice to keep contact with those still out there. So it seems like you like to visit them. Is there anything else that makes you particuarly happy? An activity, or just a place? Maybe a secret stash of candy!?
Things that make me happy...hmm. I like it when it's peaceful. It seems like that isn't common lately, though, so I guess what I enjoy the most lately is the small things. The moments where you feel content, just for a second, and then it's gone.
Hmm, yes. You seem the type to get away and enjoy what peace you can. Ah, that leads me to another question. I understand shinigami have "mindscapes" that their zanpakutou reside in. Could you give us a peek of what it looks like in there?
I've haven't seen it well. I only had glimpses of it shortly before becoming a shinigami, so I can't describe it in much detail. It's kind of dark, but it's not that there isn't light, more like the light is covered up by something...I think there are a lot of clouds. I don't really know what the landscape looks like.
Ooh~ Mysterious~ Perhaps it'll get clearer to you as your training progresses! Another relating question, will you tell us about your zanpakuto itself? Does it do anything cool?
"Cool", hmm? I don't think battle uses are "cool", but Nakukari becomes a set of eight knives in his shikai form. He has no kidou abilities, but I can control the knives without the need to touch them.
Ooh~ Knives! Hey, that'd be a cool circus trick! Ah, I'm kidding, I'm kidding. So let's go a little deeper now. Do you have any goals in this life? Maybe aspiring to be a captain~?
I don't care about advancing in rank. I think there are plenty of others more qualified than me for those positions. I do have goals, but...I'd rather not share them.
Aw, being mysterious again, I see! Well alright. Are there any secrets you -will- share with us?
A secret? I don't know if it's much of one, but I'm somewhat ambidextrous. I had to work hard to learn to use Nakukari properly.
Ohh~ Well aren't you talented! Next question! What makes you most proud?
I suppose it's achieving a goal I've set for myself. Whenever I do it just pushes me to set one higher, though.
Ah~ Well that's usually how goals work, you just keep meeting them. Now, what's the most important thing to you?
Right now, I think it's that I get stronger. There are other things, of course, but they have to come after that for now.
I'm startin' to feel left out of all these secrets you're keeping~! Boo. But moving on~ If you could do one thing over, what would it be? Would it change anything?
I...*pauses* I have a lot of regrets. I think everyone does. But the fact is, you can't change the past. It's better to look forward and try to change what you can now, rather than spend all your time looking back on what you did wrong.
Well it sounds like you've overcome a lot of tough things~ Thank you for sharing with us! We have a few members who would like to ask you some questions before we finish up. One member asks what sort of music do you like?
I prefer things that aren't too loud. Instrumental things, mostly. It's calming.
Well that's nice~ It fits you. Next question: What genre of books do you like?
I like books with a lot of depth to the story. That's more important than the specific genre.
Well that's just dandy. Why limit yourself to one genre~ One more member question! They ask: You obviously know that there are people around you who really care for you. How does it make you feel?
Ah...It's good to have people to rely on, and that support means a lot to me. I hope I'm someone they can rely on as well.
Aw! So sweet~! Er, Ahem. Thank you so much for joining us for this little interview, Kouyama-kun! I think we've learned a lot about you. Is there any last thing you'd like to say before we end this?
Thank you for having me. A lot has been going on in Soul Society lately, so everyone in the Gotei 13, please keep working hard.
