A look back at the deciding factor that made Yoshikuni Kagoko leave her family's manor to attend the shinigami academy.
~ Part I: Preparations ~
"Sugoii!" gasped a young girl as she passed by the room of the young lady of the manor. "Kagoko-sama, you look beautiful!"
Emerald orbs turned and eyed the girl. Short orange-red hair shook as the young woman chuckled.
"Thanks, but... I hate dressing this way," Kagoko said with a light sigh as the obi on her kimono was finished. "The way I have to dress for these meetings is to uncomfortable for words. Today is definitely no exception."
"Your mother and I want to make sure that each member of the Yoshikuni family are viewed as the nobility that we are," a tall, dark haired man commented as he stood in the doorway of the young girl's room. "We have to make sure that people keep a good impression of us. Otherwise, some oth--"
"I know, I know," Kagoko interrupted, annoyance apparent. "'Some other family will think we're weak and try to take us down, making us no better than the thugs in the lower districts.' I got it..."
"Yare yare," a kind woman, pretty much a mirror to Kagoko, giggled lightly as she joined her husband. "You two have this talk every time we have a meeting."
"But okaa-sama, I don't see why I have to attend the meetings," the young woman complained. "I could be researching right now."
"And just what are you researching my dear daughter?" her father asked with one eye closed.
"How to get into the Shinigami Academy."
"Th--! I thought I'd gotten you out of that phase!" her father boomed, making her mother cringe.
"It's not a phase! It's something that I know I want to do!"
"The shinigami do nothing for us in Rukongai!"
"They do a lot more than you think! The shinigami make sure that we're safe. The fight for the sake of the citizens. I want to be a part of that."
"Kagoko..." the mother spoke again, her eyes pleading for the girl to cease the conversation.
"I don't want to hear any more of that academy from you Kagoko. Especially at this meeting."
"Fine..." she mumbled turning her back to him.
The master of the manor departed his daughter's room, in a huff. Even after all he had told her, she still insisted on enrolling in that damned academy. This meeting will change all of that, he though as he went to the conference room, rubbing his temples slightly. Their guests would be arriving in a moment... enough time for him to calm down.
"Kagoko," her mother said softly. "Your father is only trying to make sure you're safe. He wants to make sure that you're secure for the future."
"But I can't do anything. Our family is male-run."
"Please... just... just make it through this meeting without mentioning the academy."
"Alright."
"Arigatou, Kago-chan."
Her mother turned and left the room as well. She wished that her only daughter would listen to her father. Maybe she'll have a change of heart after our big news, the woman thought shaking her head. She went and joined her husband in the conference room.
Looking at her reflection, Kagoko turned to get a good look at herself. The kimono that was picked for her was different than the ones she'd worn to the past meetings. It was much more elegant than the others.
Shrugging off the thought, she left her room. She was ready to get this meeting over with, she still had much to look into.
