NAME: Kamuri Suzuran
AGE: Physically in his mid-twenties, actually several hundred years old
GENDER: Male
RACE: Shinigami
RANK: Former Kyubantai fukutaichou, now has no rank within the Gotei 13
APPEARANCE: Suzuran is a tall, willowy man of a full 6'5", with just the build to accentuate and enhance his height. His limbs are long - even his fingers - and his frame so slender that it seems impossible for him to possess any combat training. Violet hair hangs in a long, straight cascade down his back, occasionally pulled into a high ponytail reaching to his waist, the color a pleasant contrast to the milk white of his skin. His features are almost too elegant - high, arching brows and eyes of a hue somewhere between that of his hair and a deep sapphire, surrounded by long, deep black lashes. He wears a simple, unadorned shihakusho, with his zanpakutou almost always present, tucked through the ties around his waist.
PERSONALITY: Contrary to the general perception among those few who still remember him, Suzuran is softspoken, even gentle, in his normal interaction. Polite, eloquent, and graceful, he has a certain subtle, unintentional charm, an effortless, understated elegance. All of his pleasantness, however, overlays a deep, abiding hatred and bitterness. The events of his past, however far back, stay with him in vivid detail, haunting and driving him. However calm he appears, he is volatile, dangerous, lethal if the wrong mood strikes him. His most deadly feature, however, is his intelligence, a frightening weapon especially when coupled with his unpredictability. It is close to impossible to guess at what will set him off, making any sort of interaction a dangerous game.
WEAPON: Yuugao - a katana with deep crimson wrapping, and a rectangular tsuba with the corners cut out, carved into a graceful filigree pattern.
ABILITIES:
Shikai: "Kuruizake, Yuugao" / "Bloom madly, Yuugao"
In shikai form, Yuugao is a large, bladed fan, perhaps two feet across. Besides possessing a deadly cutting edge, its real power lies in its poison: a fine, light powder, dispersed at will into the air. Because of its weight, a single swipe from the fan spreads it for considerable distances and leaves it hanging in the air, making it highly effective in both close- and long-range combat. Alternatively, if he lands a good enough blow, Suzuran can release the poison directly into the wound and therefore into the bloodstream. When inhaled, the poison begins to act immediately, beginning with instant, severe hallucination. Untreated, it can kill in under an hour, with symptoms ranging from unsteadiness and disorientation in the early stages to rapidly increasing pain, as well as convulsions and unconsciousness that can become as severe as coma in the later. It is a particularly difficult weapon to defend against, because of its ability to turn an entire battlefield deadly to breathe in; however, Suzuran himself is immune to this poison, and possesses a solution that protects his allies from it if used shortly before battle.
HISTORY: Several hundred years ago, Kamuri Suzuran was fukutaichou of Kyubantai, friend of his taichou Tsukijou Hara and well-liked among those of his division. He was an excellent shinigami, on the path to becoming a taichou himself, perhaps, if he chose to pursue it, skilled and respected. He fought hollows in the tumult of the war that tore through the living world - the same war that had taken his own life as a human - displaying leadership and respect for those under his command that was known throughout the Gotei 13.
The human wars of the time meant a much higher level of hollow activity than normal. Men died in scores, bringing them out of Hueco Mundo in droves to feed; bitter spirits turned much faster than normal, filling the fields of the dead with an entirely different form of slaughter, and constantly, shinigami were sent into the chaos, able to do little to control it.
The Gotei 13 were at a loss. No matter how hard they fought, they couldn't reduce the hollows' numbers. In desperation, they made the decision to attack Hueco Mundo itself, eliminate their enemies at their source, at least enough to get the situation in the living world under control. Protest was raised, but the order was given, falling to Hara and Kyubantai.
Suzuran fought - not with his taichou, but with the others, with Yamamoto-soutaichou. It was too much for a force that small, too dangerous. Too many would die.
His voice fell to deaf ears.
Within a matter of days, a group of shinigami had been assembled, selected from his division by himself and Hara for their skills and their strengths. They entered Hueco Mundo with all the preparation they could manage.
It was more of a slaughter than a battle. Not far into that bleak, white desert, they were set upon, the flaring reiatsu of the fight attracting more and more of its inhabitants. Suzuran and a group of men under his command were separated from Hara, trapped by several of the most powerful hollows the fukutaichou had encountered in his time as a shinigami; the taichou fought to regroup, but in the heat of the battle, the order came abruptly as Soul Society realized the weight of their mistake: retreat, retreat immediately, and don't risk unnecessary loss. The dead were to be left behind.
Suzuran was counted as one of them.
There wasn't a thing his taichou could do in the face of his orders. Responsibility for the majority of his men had to take priority, no matter what. The fukutaichou tore through the hollows as quickly as he could, fighting desperately, but their numbers were overwhelming. The last he saw of Tsukijou Hara in that white hell was a flash of the back of his haori as he escaped, and then he was alone, fighting and waiting to die.
Suzuran saw more death and horror in that single battle than in the rest of his time as a shinigami combined. His subordinates, men and women he considered friends, were ripped apart, turned callously into the hollows' sustenance before his eyes, and against their overwhelming force there wasn't a thing he could do.
By his rank, he alone survived the confrontation. He was taken to the hollows who formed the head of Hueco Mundo, then subsequently imprisoned, tortured at every opportunity for information about the unprecedented attack. Suzuran thought he would die there, beaten and torn; but finally, after weeks of pain and fear, he managed to free himself, and he ran with a desperation he had never known before.
It was a broken man that returned to Seireitei. Shadows of what had happened haunted him; he saw that death again, around every corner, heard it in every clash of weapons as the shinigami of his division carried out their daily training. Hara did what he could, and for a time Suzuran tried to return to some semblance of normalcy, but the damage was done, irreversible.
The Gotei 13 were never certain exactly what provoked him. Records of the incident were kept, of course, the details of the events leading up to it conveniently left out. Without warning or apparent reason, Suzuran started killing the shinigami of his division indiscriminately. Over a hundred fell to his blade that day, and those who witnessed it and survived said that, as he turned to face his taichou when the man came to stop him, he was smiling.
Tsukijou Hara was among the dead.
Suzuran was captured and thrown into the Maggot's Nest, his given sentence detainment for the rest of his life. The confinement, however, was too much like what he had suffered in Hueco Mundo, too strong a reminder for him to accept. He fought tooth and nail to escape, running away with a trail of blood in his wake, driven by mad desperation. Eventually, Seireitei was forced to give up the search. He never returned, and eventually, time erased almost all trace of him.
Kamuri Suzuran was a forgotten stain on the Gotei 13's history, nothing more.
They didn't know he survived.
